Gilmore Girls Fans, Rejoice: Amy Sherman-Palladino Has a New Show

If you’ve been missing your dose of witty brunettes full of snappy comebacks since her other shows wrapped up, worry not – writer and director Amy Sherman-Palladino is back with something new. The mind and voice behind Gilmore Girls and Bunheads brings us an Amazon original called The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and season one drops Wednesday, November 29.

The show centers around Miriam “Midge” Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan), a late-1950s housewife dedicated to running a perfect household, maintaining a carefully-measured figure, and supporting her loser husband’s comedy career. In the pilot, which was released as an audience test back in March, we see said husband leave her for his secretary, in a TV trope you’ll just have to overlook because you’re going to love Midge so much. We see her flail for the first time, and the pilot concludes with her going on stage and doing standup on her own, instead—and,unlike her unoriginal ex—crushing it.

As shows like Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip found in the past, it’s tough to write a drama about someone who’s great at comedy, but if the pilot is any indication, Midge is actually pretty stellar at being funny. Brosnahan, known previously for her work in House of Cards and The Blacklist, shows she has great timing and delivery. It’s going to be fun to watch her join the Sherman-Palladino force of brassy, hilarious women.

Plus, a new (multiyear!) venture with Amazon means Sherman-Palladino might one day revisit Stars Hollow. After where the Gilmore Girls “A Year in the Life” Netflix revival left us, we’ll take any hope we can get, amirite?

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is a little rougher than shows like Gilmore Girls and Bunheads, which ran on more family-friendly platforms like the WB, the CW, and ABC Family in their day. With Amazon, anything goes, so get ready for some colorful language on and off-stage, and a little more nudity than you might expect.

Also: TV writers everywhere should now be accepting suggestions for what this show’s shorter nickname should be, because ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ is going to take up a lot of characters on Twitter.
