I think I might smile every day if I lived in Becca and Doug’s South Bay Area home. Natural light pours in through big windows, bouncing off white walls and light blond wood floors. But it’s the bold, colorful and stunning pattern that Becca’s infused in nearly every corner of this house that makes it so cheerful.

From Becca:

“We have been in our home for 2.5 years now and we absolutely love it, but we have put a LOT of work into it. The people that had owned the house before us had done a ton of renovations and remodels (including adding a second story!) but they ran out of money on the project and sold the house and moved out of California. They really put a lot of love into the home and we are glad to be able to continue the work they started. We love the large backyard with garden, koi pond, covered spa, and lots of room to run around and entertain. We also love all the natural light that fills the home and all of the nooks and crannies the home has—lots of hidden secrets and spaces!”

Apartment Therapy Survey:

Our Style: I am usually drawn to mid-century and bohemian styles – but really I just buy/decorate with whatever feels right. I figure that if I really love something I will make it work in our home.

Inspiration: California, flea markets, open houses and estate sales, old interior design/lifestyle magazines, the ’60s and various blogs

Favorite Element: We were drawn to the house because of all of the outdoor space, plants, and water features. It feels like an oasis being at home! The weather is so amazing here that we spend just as much of our time outside as we do in.

Biggest Challenge: When we moved into the house the kitchen and master bathroom had just been renovated. They were definitely not our style but it seemed wasteful to re-do something that was just done. We have tried to update the spaces in a way that feels more like us but using the existing materials. For the kitchen we painted the cabinets and added some custom elements like the wine storage above the fridge and in the master bathroom we added the shelving so we could display art/treasures that we loved.

What Friends Say: Relaxing!

Biggest Embarrassment: If you open any closet in the house they are all a total mess! We tend to be people who cram clutter into closets.

Proudest DIY: I’m the least handy person on the planet so we have mostly outsourced all of our updates and renovations.

Biggest Indulgence: In terms of upgrades we have made to the house, I would say re-doing all of the floors and staircase to be hardwood. The original owners had a combo of laminate and carpet and it needed to go. As far as furniture, the first thing we bought when we moved in were the Moller dining room chairs because I loved them so much (we didn’t even have a table!) They are very dreamy but also very pricey!

Best Advice: Live in your space awhile before making any major decisions. We started making updates after buying our house and before moving in, and I likely would have done things differently if I had lived in the space a bit longer.

Dream Sources: If I could, I would love to just travel around and visit the best antique flea markets, thrift stores, and estate sales.
