My next purchases are going to be a PowerSquid power strip (to protect what we do have), a Logitech Harmony 550 universal remote, and a USB-to-IR converter so that we can use a remote control on the laptop.

The scary before shot. When setting everything up again, I packed away the VCR and we put the sub outside; because our current speakers do well for our apartment setting.
The mess I started with.
The set-up in within the context of the room--just need artwork on the walls now. The Apex TV with built-in DVD player is from 2002, and was a gift. The speakers are from my husband's college Aiwa stereo deck that doesn't work any more, and the Sony receiver was a gift back in 2001.
On the right-hand side of the lower shelf, we have our external hard drive, FM antenna (laying flat now, not in use), AM antenna, and 2 cords ready for the laptop when my husband brings it home from studying so that we can watch downloaded shows and listen to music [one is an S-video, that connects to the TV; the other is a 1/8
On the left-hand side of the lower shelf is our cable modem, wireless router, and 2 boxes to hold cords that aren't needed very often, like for our printer. (And some cords still have a mind of their own, as this CAT5 does, refusing to be nicely rolled.)
To the left of the radiator is a loveseat, on a slight angle, and tucked behind the seat is an antique drawer set, with a box used for CDs on top to put the KLH speaker above the height of the loveseat. From the front, the box is barely visible.
Between the couch and the wall I've tucked some boxes from Marshall's ($9.99 each), to house the other KLH speaker and to have a place to set your drink. The white spot is the 3M Command hook holding the speaker wire in place and is invisible from any angle but this one.
The cable entry point is exactly opposite from the TV, so coaxial clips nailed into the wall hold the wire along the baseboard without pinching the wire or getting in the way of my yoga area.
Professionally recommended supplies: wipes and can of air are from Best Buy; the Pledge wipes are also for electronics; the 3M Command poster tape and hooks hold speaker wire in place, and the coaxial C-clips hold the cable cord to the wall just above the baseboard as it snakes around the room.
